i don't know if you use it yet, but snapping is a neat little function to avoid stuff like that from happening ;>
btw: the ear tip is pointy
but i gotta admit: the tapering looks fantastic

but seriously: personally i don't think it's that big a deal(i mean, it's wrong, but not wrongity-wrong, just regular type) but some folks are rather zealous about it

(if you don't already see the bar in inkscape:
view -> show/hide -> snap controls bar )
hotkey to en/dis-able snapping is %, check some options and you're set up to snap(just dragging stuff above other stuff, really) nodes to other nodes or paths
i was hesitant at first but it's a nice little feature, that helps with strokes ending in other strokes or similar problems ;>
